Engineering students at Hope College in Michigan designed a new EV charging system to be used by students on campus, but when not in use actually charging EVs the solar-powered devices send power back to other buildings on campus.
It's a brilliant way to help the university keep energy costs low, maximize sustainable energy over higher carbon emitting sources, and can provide a great source of back-up power if needed to add resilience to their entire system.
Bravo to these engineering students. I hope they got an “A” for their project.
"It's tied to the grid, so it will all go right into the building. If students aren't charging their cars, the energy that the system is generating will be used elsewhere on campus," Michelle Seppala Gibbs, the university's director of the office of sustainability, said in a statement.
