The U.S. Department of Transportation announced $110 million in grants for 19 wildlife crossing projects across 17 states, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These projects aim to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, which result in human fatalities and significant economic costs annually. Selected initiatives include overpasses, underpasses, and wildlife fencing to enhance safety and habitat connectivity, aligning with the goal of zero roadway deaths and serious injuries.
Each year, wildlife-vehicle collisions in the U.S. result in about 200 human fatalities and 26,000 injuries, costing the public over $10 billion.
