Nestle are bringing Accessible QR codes to KitKat and Quality Street brands, allowing blind and low vision consumers to identify the products and review ingredients using their smart phones. There are two key scanning technologies in play at the moment, Zapier's Accessible QR and NaviLens with both requiring an app to be installed to be able to scan the products.
Nestle have both technologies in use with SMA using NaviLens on their products (see SMA Infant Formula Brand Adds NaviLens to Packaging) Both technologies provide product details and can be scanned further away than a standard QR code, with NaviLens being the best for distant scanning. It will be interesting if Nestle continue to deploy both technologies, or consolidate on a single technology.
“We’re delighted that shoppers can now use Zappar technology through their smartphones to access important on pack information such as allergy information and dietary requirements on KitKat and Quality Street packs; including improving the tough decision-making process of which one to eat first by describing the shape and colour of each sweet.”
