Spain’s olive oil producers are now transforming tons of olive pits into biofuel. These pits, a byproduct of olive oil production, are used to heat homes, power industries, and even fuel airplanes. This sustainable energy initiative gained momentum after the energy crisis from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. About 400,000 tons of olive pits are produced annually, some sold for around 300 euros per ton as biofuel, while others power traditional olive mills. It’s a growing source of income for Spanish farmers.
During the pressing stage in the oil production process, the pits are squeezed out and separated before being washed and dried to create fuel similar to wood pellets used in certain domestic stoves, grills, and fireplaces.
