A recent research by the Research Institute for Sustainability – Helmholtz Centre Potsdam (RIFS) together with the Bertelsmann Stiftung shows big differences within the EU when comparing the transition towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 4 countries were compared Denmark and Norway leading by example whereas UK and Germany lagging behind.
Regarding energy transition in Germany the main obstacle is its underdeveloped power grid infrastructure, the UK needs a clear direction in phasing out gas production and adding specific targets for expanding its transmission and distribution networks.
Further aspects compared are heating transition, where Denmark had taken first action already in 2014 and road transport transition with Norway being able to share best practice.
By the way Denmark, according to the EU Commission, to date, is the only EU member state who met the July 2024 deadline to communicate full transposition of the Renewable Energy Directive’s provisions.
Systemic change towards zero emissions before mid-century has yet to occur in most countries", says says Germán Bersalli from the RIFS, "however, examples of pioneering nations in various sectors demonstrate that accelerating energy transformation is still achievable with substantial policy efforts.
