Sponge parks are green spaces designed to manage stormwater and reduce urban flooding by absorbing and filtering rainwater. These parks use porous materials and vegetation to retain water, prevent runoff, and improve water quality. They also provide recreational spaces, enhance biodiversity, and reduce urban heat. Montreal is building 30 sponge parks and 400 sponge sidewalks to combat climate change impacts, with some sites capable of holding millions of liters of water. These efforts aim to create more resilient and sustainable cities.
