In the media we hear about the dangers of online gaming and how it is damaging our society, we also hear a narrative around disabled people only contributing when they are working. A new documentary film on Netflix called ‘The Remarkable Life of Ibelin’ tells Mats Steen's story and challenges these narratives.
Mats Steen, a Norwegian gamer died from a degenerative muscular disease at the age of 25. Mats's parents assumed that Mats had an isolated and lonely life without friendship and love. After his death, they discovered that Mats lived a remarkable life. Mats contributed to society through his friendship and support to other online gamers, materially improving their quality of life. The film also covers how online gaming can provide connection and support with mental health across countries and cultures.
It is a beautiful story showing the best of humankind, challenging the narratives we see in the media, providing a more nuanced view of online gaming and its benefits. As a parent, I will consider how I approach online gaming for my kids and challenge the common narrative that it is bad for them. As a person with disabilities, I will reflect on the areas I am contributing to society that aren't related to working and paying taxes.
I encourage everyone to watch the film, but ensure you have tissues at hand.
