A recent study highlights how four targeted policies could dramatically reduce plastic waste and emissions by 2050, eliminating 90% of plastic waste and cutting 30% of related carbon emissions.
The proposed measures include mandating that 40% of all new plastic products be made with post-consumer recycled plastic, capping new plastic production at 2020 levels, significantly investing in waste management systems such as landfills and waste collection services, and implementing a small fee on plastic packaging. Together, these policies offer a clear path toward a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
This policy package also delivers climate benefits, reducing emissions equivalent to taking 300 million gasoline-powered vehicles off the road for one year.
