World's Most Powerful Onshore Wind Turbine

The world’s most powerful onshore wind turbine recently turned on in northeast China by manufacturer Sany. It has been tested to produce 15MW of energy – enough to power 160,000 households.

Now that's it grid-connected it will continue to be tested for more than a year.  There has been some backlash in the industry that these supersized turbines are creating challenges in reliability and supply chains. Manufacturers are continuing to push the limits, however, with larger and more powerful turbines.

The SI-270150 model has an extended design life of 25 to 30 years and blade lengths of 131 metres, with a maximum swept area of over 57,000 square metres. A single turbine could, said Sany, generate enough electricity to power 160,000 households.
