Years ago when Apple first considered adding cellular connectivity to their Mac computers, CEO Steve Jobs said they decided against it because the technology at the time would have locked consumers into a single telecom carrier for the life of the computer.

We've come a long way, baby.

Today, chips can be unlocked and you can change carriers if desired. And obviously the connectivity speeds have gotten significantly faster with 5G speeds, and soon even faster with millimeter-wave technology.

Sure, you'll need a carrier (and one more monthly bill) just like today's cell phones, but you won't be limited to WiFi or hotspots for your computer/laptop. You'll just need to make sure the carrier you choose will be accessible in all the places you wish to roam.
