For all the challenges associated with climate change (severe storms, rising seas, droughts, etc.), there are some who are looking to potentially cash in on the benefits.

The snow and ice that have long kept Greenland from being an accessible area for mining natural resources are becoming less of a threat. The ice sheet and glaciers are being replaced by wetlands, areas of shrub and barren rock. What used to be pristine territory is now being developed to unearth oil, nickel and copper.

If I were running Greenland and saw this as my (perhaps only) chance to change the course of history and turn the island into a flourishing economy rich with resources, I might do the same. I can't blame them. Money doesn't solve everything, but it solves A LOT of things. And it can completely transform the country's infrastructure, education system, energy grid, economy and independence for many generations to come.

It just feels… dirty

It feels like it's happening for all the wrong reasons.

Hopefully, the new-found opportunities for Greenland are developed responsibly and partnerships between the government and corporations create a plan to balance the country's rich history with its very rich future.
