On a recent March Saturday morning, 23 Intertek employees swapped their weekend plans for work gloves and trash bags to take part in San Antonio’s Basura Bash. This annual, all-volunteer event is dedicated to cleaning up the banks of local waterways, and our Transportation Technologies team took on the Zarzamora Creek tributary which is right in our own backyard.
Leading up to the event, employees kept an eye on the creek during their daily commutes, evaluating the work ahead. By the end of the day, they were able to see the impact of their efforts firsthand. While the 2025 numbers are still being counted, last year’s event saw 1,714 volunteers haul away 70,400 pounds of trash, 3,000 pounds of metals, 3,160 pounds of tires and 10,000 pounds of recyclables so we can expect similar numbers from this year’s roundup. Removing this debris helps protect San Antonio’s water supply and the small animals, birds and plants and people that rely on it!
A bonus “find” this year was a Puppy! Yes, one of our Intertek families now has a new addition. He does have a medical issue, but after an assessment at the Humane Society, they have decided to keep him. The event not only helped clean up our waterways, it saved a life.
Intertek is proud to support our community and keep San Antonio’s waterways clean. A big thank you to our employees who showed up, stepped up and made a difference!
The Basura Bash Planning Organization modified its litter pick-up program in 2005 to include the recycling of plastics, paper, and bottles. To date, volunteers have picked up 31.02 tons of recyclables.
