Movies are a fun diversion, and let's be honest… In some cases they can also be educational! And that's especially true about movies that cover historical people or events in time.
Yet, Hollywood has also been known to stretch the truth in search of a good storyline. And these five movies have been called out as being especially, ummm… far from being historically accurate.
Are they good movies? Mostly, yes. Are they true to history. Not so much! The list includes:
- Braveheart - If ‘Most Historically Inaccurate Picture’ were an Academy Awards category, it would have won five!
- JFK - Essentially a feature-length conspiracy theory — albeit a highly compelling one — about the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the political thriller was described by Stone himself as a “counter-myth” to the Warren Commission’s official findings.
- Gladiator - Director Ridley Scott knows his historical epics aren’t historically accurate and doesn’t care at all.
- Pocahontas - No one watches an animated Disney movie for a history lesson, but the problems with 1995’s Pocahontas are so foundational that they bear special mention.
- 10,000 BC - Nearly all of its major elements, from woolly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers to pyramids and the written language are off by several thousand years in either direction.
Read the story for the full details, and while this shouldn't diminish the entertainment value of these films they also shouldn't be an excuse to avoid the history books!
Movies about history aren’t always known for their historical accuracy, which isn’t really a problem unless you’re basing all your knowledge of Napoleon on "Napoleon."
