Plastic That Vanishes in Seawater

Imagine a world where plastic waste doesn't linger in our oceans for centuries. Japanese scientists from the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and the University of Tokyo have developed a new plastic that dissolves in seawater within hours.

This innovative material maintains the strength of traditional plastics but breaks down quickly in saltwater, leaving no harmful residue. In lab tests, a small piece of this plastic disappeared in just an hour when stirred in saltwater.

While commercialization plans are still in the works, the potential impact on reducing ocean pollution is significant. As plastic waste continues to threaten marine life and ecosystems, such advancements offer hope for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Plastic pollution is set to triple by 2040, the UN Environment Programme has predicted, adding 23-37 million metric tons of waste into the world's oceans each year.
