Every year on July 31, we recognize World Ranger Day—a global tribute to the brave men and women who protect our natural and cultural heritage. It’s also a day of remembrance for rangers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Rangers are on the frontlines of conservation, safeguarding wildlife, managing protected areas, and supporting local communities. Yet their work is often dangerous and under-resourced. In the past year alone, 175 rangers across 41 countries were killed while carrying out their duties.
This year’s theme, “Rangers, Powering Transformative Conservation,” highlights their essential role in achieving global biodiversity goals. With only 286,000 rangers currently employed and a projected need for over 1.5 million by 2030, their work has never been more critical.
You can support rangers by:
- Taking a moment of silence for fallen rangers
- Sharing their stories online using #WorldRangerDay
- Donating to organizations like the Thin Green Line Foundation
- Spreading awareness about the challenges they face
Let’s honor their courage and stand with those protecting the planet—today and every day.
Today, we pay tribute to park rangers, also known as forest rangers — the unsung heroes who protect, preserve, and defend America’s dwindling wilderness land resources.
