A new quaerwe has been released in the U.S. featuring Stacey Park Milbern, the founder of Disability Justice who passed away in 2020 at 33 years old. Stacey isn't the first wheelchair users to be featured on U.S. currency, President Franklin Roosevelt was the first. However, Stacey is the first women and the first to include her wheelchair on the coin.
Coins have long been used to celebrate and remember important figures in our society, including Stacey increases awareness of her work and represents disabled people on an item that is used by millions daily.
If you are in the US, look out for this coin in your change.
“Stacey is not the first wheelchair user on currency. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt has been featured on the dime continuously since 1946, but he is presented as a disembodied head,” Maria Town, president of the American Association of People with Disabilities or AAPD, told The 19th.
