The news feeds a filled with stories of AI being used for bad, from cloning voices to scam people to generating fake videos. With every wave of technology, it can be used for good or bad. On this occasion, I share about the positive impact of AI and how it can be used to improve lives.
Sarah lost her voice over 25 years ago after being diagnosed with MND (Motor neurone disease) at the age of 34 just before her second child was born. She has been using a synthetic voice for year, but recently with advances in AI, she has recovered her own voice by using just 8 seconds from an old VHS tape. Watch this touching interview for the full story.
Sarah is using technology known as Eye Gaze to control the screen and type what she wants to say. This technology can be used to control computers, tablets and phones. Apple added eye tracking in IOS and iPadOS 18 making the technology available to all iPhone and iPad users. The following video shows how the feature can be setup and used.
The organisations that include people with disabilities and build accessibility into their products and services will gain a competitive advantage. As we move forward in this ever faster paced world of technology and AI, it is important that we look for the ways we can use the technology to improve lives and our environment.
"After such a long time, I couldn't really remember my voice," Sarah Ezekiel tells BBC Access All. "When I first heard it again, I felt like crying. It's a kind of miracle."
