La industria naviera mundial genera cada año más de mil millones de toneladas de emisiones de carbono, casi el 3% del total mundial, una cantidad similar a la de la aviación.

Para reducir esas emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, se necesitan nuevos combustibles y fuentes de energía alternativas: la eólica es una de ellas.
