Bangladeshi scientists discover new antibiotics on jute seeds

"A plant endophyte Staphylococcus hominis strain MBL_AB63 produces a novel lantibiotic, homicorcin and a position one variant."

At least five antibiotics can be produced from rare bacteria found on the seeds, providing a means to combat various kinds of bacterial infections, according to genome sequencing by the research team.

In conclusion, the newly identified class I lantibiotic homicorcin produced by Staphylococcus hominis strain MBL_AB63 has potent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococci and related species.
