July is Disability Pride month, a month dedicated to raising awareness of disabilities and promoting inclusiveness. I only heard of the month last year despite it originating in the 90's (read my post from last year).

In the last year, I have been having more conversations with colleagues about my disability (sight loss), people are curious but also affraid of saying the wrong thing. The conversations have helped me, but also helped others by allowing them to gain a better understanding of how I adapt. Throughout these conversations, colleagues have shared their disabilities or those of friends and family providing an improved understanding of how different people adapt to disabilities for all.

Being Disabled is not being less of a person, or less valuable than others - we just approach some things differently. Use July to talk with friends, family, and colleagues about disability and how it impacts them.
