While this sounds like a lot of money (and it is!), keep in mind that GM earned around $175 Billion in revenue last year. So $2 Billion is what GM makes every two days.
Once you get past the massive investment, it makes sense for what they're actually spending it on: their future.
The new Technology & Design Center in Michigan houses the engineers and creatives who will dream-up the vehicles of the future, as well as the 3D design centers, conference rooms, inspiration areas, and all the bells-and-whistles a modern technology center could provide.
The price is almost meaningless if it results in a competitive advantage for GM and increase in market share. To NOT invest in the company's future could be far more costly.
How do car designers peer eight to 10 years into the future to create vehicles that not only look good but will sell? In this building, GM creatives have moved into a new house, and the ideas are flowing. Here at the intersection of art, design, engineering, and technology, GM is flexing the vehicles the public already knows are coming, plus many more that very few people have seen.
