LEGO has committed to make half the plastic in its bricks from renewable materials by the year 2026. The company is investing over $350 million in sustainable materials, including plastics made from recycled cooking oil and food industry waste. It also runs a Replay program, where old LEGO bricks are repurposed and donated. LEGO hopes that investing in green alternatives will drive future cost reductions.
Estimated to increase the production costs by around 70%, the company’s CEO stated its bottom line will bear the burden as it hopes continued investment by LEGO will allow companies that make recycled plastic monomers to expand and reduce these high costs.
