With an aging population and the number of people with disabilities rising we need homes that are designed to be accessible. Back in 2021, I shared how Austrailia plan to change building codes to increase accessibility. But this is a global challenge. The benefits of designing and building accessible homes will benefit everyone.
Matt’s Place Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting people with ALS and Miller Hull architecture firm have partnered and created Matt's Place 2.0, a prototype for accessible homes. The modular home is designed to allow for flexible construction that is both sustainable and accessible. Consisting of modules that can be transported on trailers for fast construction and constructed in different configurations to suit the specific needs.
Due to the constraints of fitting on a trailer, the home is designed as an L shape, which enables decking on the outside with access to the outside from every room. The ability to get outside and be with nature helps improve the quality of life. The home is beautiful with lots of natural light and wood, see the photo gallery.
Matt's Place is a great step to making accessible homes available in the short term, however we need to be most new homes need to be built to be accessible to meet the existing and growing demand.
“We’re trying to elevate the human spirit, ideally, in a building,” Court says. “As architects, these buildings aren’t about us—they’re about the occupant. So how can we make it the best possible surrounding for them?”
