Recent news about the shut down of a key electricity cable between Britain and France have highlighted the enormous infrastructure behind energy generation and distribution and the interdependence between countries. 

Whilst some of the associated infrastructure is well known to many Intertek colleagues (e.g. the Energy and Water Consultancy Services team), many of us carry on with our daily routines, switching on lights and using electrical appliances, without thinking too much about what makes those simple gestures possible.

Electricity interconnectors enable excess power, such as that generated from wind and solar farms, to be traded and shared between countries. This ensures renewable energy isn’t wasted and makes for a greener, more efficient power system.
