I have donated blood for many years, ever since one of my best friends educated me on the dire need for blood. At the time her six year old son was fighting an aggressive childhood cancer that required many blood transfusions to keep him alive. I am happy to report that because of his courageous spirit and the blood donations made by so many he is now in his late teens still enjoying life.
This year I am on the receiving end rather than the giving and I too am so incredibly grateful to all the donors out there that have selflessly taken the time to provide such an important donation. So THANK YOU to all the donors and if you have not donated blood in the past please consider it if you are able. You are saving a life by doing so.
Every year countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. The global theme of World Blood Donor Day changes each year in recognition of the selfless individuals who donate their blood for people unknown to them.
