In a remarkable step towards environmental sustainability, Cambodia is witnessing a powerful social movement. Over 2.65 million people have rallied behind a government-led campaign to combat plastic waste. Spearheaded by Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth, this initiative has engaged 5,808 schools nationwide, urging individuals to commit to one plastic-free day each week. It's a resounding call to action that showcases the collective power of Cambodians in the fight against plastic pollution. As they embrace eco-friendly alternatives, Cambodia paves the way for a greener and cleaner future.
Addressing the enormity of the issue, Cambodia generates approximately 56 million plastic bags daily. This amounts to an alarming 279 tons of plastic waste daily. To counter this, the country has introduced waste separation bins in schools and ardently promotes recycling and composting.
