Southeastern Louisiana University to collect Christmas trees for wetland restoration

Southeastern Louisiana University's innovative approach to sustainability involves collecting Christmas trees for wetland restoration. In collaboration with various partners, the Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station utilizes these recycled trees to combat erosion and rebuild marshland in the Manchac Swamp Wetlands.

The initiative, now in its 29th year, demonstrates a practical and eco-friendly method of repurposing holiday trees to enhance environmental health. This program serves as a sustainable practice model and actively involves students and volunteers in hands-on ecological restoration. Such projects highlight the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation and offer a replicable model for other regions facing similar ecological challenges.

This project promotes environmental sustainability and captures the spirit of the holidays. Recycling Christmas trees for ecological restoration transforms a symbol of holiday celebration into a tool for environmental healing. This initiative wonderfully merges the joy and generosity associated with the holiday season with practical, earth-friendly actions, fostering a deeper connection between community traditions and the health of our planet.

“Southeastern scientists and volunteers at Turtle Cove use the discarded trees to help build up marshland in areas that have been impacted by erosion and other factors.”
