A new startup company in California is looking to begin “using seawater to remove hundreds of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the air.”

And while that's an exciting proposition in itself, there's another key benefit that the company is pursuing further north along the Pacific coast:

Washington’s shellfish aquaculture industry employs thousands of people and is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The alkaline stream that [startup company] Ebb returns to the sea should reduce acidity locally and could boost the growth of marine organisms. The company is actively seeking shellfish nurseries and hatcheries to partner with on future projects.

Ultimately, if the company can succeed in removing the CO2 from the atmosphere AND make a few bucks while doing it, that seems like a fair trade. We'll keep an eye out for progress.
