Ronaldo ditches Coca-Cola for water at Euro 2020 press conference

Euro 2020 is finally here and football lovers are busy watching the games. Let's talk about health, marketing, and an interesting scene from the Euro 2020 press conference.

Portugal got a 3-0 victory against Hungary yesterday with football star Cristiano Ronaldo scoring two late, record-breaking goals to become the record goalscorer at the European Championship finals.

At the prelude press conference, the star also marked a "historical moment" to ditch two bottles of Coca-Cola, an official sponsor of Euro 2020, and then held up a bottle of water before declaring in Portuguese: “Agua!” for water.

It was reported that Coca-Cola's share price dropped 1.6% almost immediately after Ronaldo's gesture, a dip of $4bn in market value.

Ronaldo picked his choice of drink, an unbranded bottle of water, in front of the world. It was a nightmare for Coca-cola. Would it have been better if they had also sponsored with their water brand - Dasani?

Will his fans follow suit to lead a more healthy lifestyle and ditch sugary drinks for water? The evaporation of Coca-cola's market value seems to give an indication of the influence Ronaldo may have on his ~300 million followers on Instagram.

A Euro 2020 spokesperson said: “Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences. Everyone is entitled to their drink preferences”.
