At 6.9 million square kilometers Amazon Rainforest is 7.9 times the size of Texas and is responsible for producing than 20% of the world's oxygen, which is why it is many times referred to as "Lungs of the Earth". 

This area has been under increasing pressures do to deforestation for many decades. If you Google "help stop deforestation of the Amazon rainforest" you will retrieve over 8 million results. 

There are things we can all do to reduce the stress on this important global asset and like many initiatives, it is the people closest to it who are having the most impact. 

This story discusses of a group of 32 Indigenous women in the Brazilian Amazon responsible for a decrease of deforestation in their reserve, from 2,000 hectares in 2016, to only 63 hectares in 2018. It also talks about Nemonte Nenquimo who is on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of 2020 for her efforts in fighting for our planet.
