It's summertime and scorching hot across most of the Northern Hemisphere, so that means a lot of people will be heading to the beach or pool to cool off. Or enjoying outdoor activities, BBQs, or exercise.

When we are outdoors with exposure to the sun's rays, of course! Hopefully most people use sunscreen which can not only help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays (did you know that anyone can get skin cancer regardless of age, gender, or skin tone?). Sunscreen can also protect from sunburn and premature aging.

But suncreen isn't like food or milk or other items that you definitely know when they have gone bad! And it's not just a marketing ploy to get you to buy another bottle.

“The most important consequence is that you won’t be getting full protection from the sun if your sunscreen has gone bad,” says Kelly Dobos, MSc, MBA, cosmetic chemist and adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati. “Plus, other ingredients in skin care and makeup, like certain naturally derived oils, can go rancid over time and irritate the skin or break you out.”
