I was today-years-old when I learned that Netflix still ships DVDs. I must have missed their announcement earlier in the year saying that they were, in fact, going to discontinue the classic DVD subscription service later this year (in September).

Shout-out to all those people still getting your movies in the mail. Perhaps you're also using payphones and a Rand McNally road atlas too? Ah, the good ol' days. Some of you reading this may not have even been born when Netflix started shipping DVDs in 1997. It was such a breakthrough that it signaled the beginning of the end of the video rental store market and mega chains like Blockbuster Video.

Anyway, these days Netflix ships its movies via DVD.com, appropriately enough. And once the service is discontinued anyone with outstanding DVDs will be allowed to just keep them, up to ten.

Who knows, maybe they will be worth something one day, just like a mint condition set of Encyclopedia Britannica. Or perhaps they will even make a fashionable comeback like vinyl records.

I wouldn't hold the pause button waiting.
