Nissan turns old batteries into new portable power supplies

Nissan's innovative approach to repurposing old electric vehicle batteries into new portable power supplies is a game-changing move in sustainable technology. This initiative not only breathes new life into otherwise discarded materials but also provides a greener alternative to traditional power sources.

By transforming old batteries into portable power supplies, Nissan addresses two significant issues: waste management and sustainable energy. This forward-thinking strategy exemplifies how corporations can be part of the solution to environmental challenges. With a circular economy in mind, Nissan's initiative sets a precedent for both automakers and tech industries to follow.

Nissan has sold more than 650,000 Leaf electric cars with batteries that retain their functionality even after the cars themselves have ceased to function. This news prompted the company to look for a solution to exploit residual batteries, which remain unused after electric cars retire. To achieve this ambitious initiative, Nissan has partnered with JVC Kenwood Corp., a company specializing in electronic devices, and 4R Energy Corp., a manufacturer and marketer of lithium-ion battery systems for hybrid vehicles. Together, they are turning the still-efficient batteries into portable power sources currently on sale in Japan for 170,500 yen.
