Autonomous Vehicles aren't just for "driverless taxis" in urban areas

The technology is taking off and experts are developing new uses for autonomous vehicles every day. One of the industries benefiting significantly is one that we might not always associate with high-tech imagery and equipment: farming.

The introduction of GPS accuracy 20 years ago started a revolution in the agriculture world by enabling greater efficiency and land usage. Today, however, those GPS-enabled tractors, sprayers and harvesters are going autonomous with GPS and AI built in for even greater efficiency, accuracy, productivity and sustainability.

We used to say “farm to fork”. Now I guess you can say we're "chips to chips”.

AVs can also engage in "precision agriculture," allowing farmers to precisely apply pesticides, fertilizer, and water, which reduces waste and increases sustainability over the long term. A report from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers found that precision farming reduced water use, dirty energy use, and herbicide and pesticide use while also increasing crop production by 4%.
