Bangladesh was one of the poorest countries in South Asia during Independence in 1971. US National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger described newborn Bangladesh as an “international basket case” set up to fail.
Now, Bangladesh progressing faster than many of its neighbouring countries. The RMG sector-leading its economic development and contributing to SDG achievement as well. The economy is diversifying with significant contribution from the agriculture sector, service sector, remittances, IT sector and microfinance.
The economy of Bangladesh has come a long way in the past 50 years. The enduring image of Bangladesh earlier was that of a disaster victim. Fifty years down the line, the country is now globally appreciated as a disaster manager. Several sectors have played an important role in the development of our economy.
