Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the idea of Work from Home (WFH) was a fantasy to many people. This is principally because home working requires a quiet and dedicated space to perform work duties which can be a challenge for those living in tiny homes or to those who lives in a full-nest family.

The pandemic has impacted daily lives from the way people socialize and spend time with family, to how people learn and even work. For many people, this crisis has meant a sudden shift to remote working environments. Many of us continue to work at home, simultaneously juggling multiple roles. Overall, for women, the situation is pretty grim.

Trying to progress in your career whilst also raising a family presents a whole new set of challenges. The pandemic has intensified the challenges that women face in the workplace. Working mothers have always had to balance the double shift – going to work followed by looking after children.

So not only do working mothers have to adopt to work related challenges caused by the pandemic, but they also have to look after their children, possibly homeschool, and keep on top of house work. It is not an easy balance, yet mothers across the globe are facing this daily.

Recognizing and acknowledging the complexity of the situation is a key element in creating a work-life balance. It is also important to understand that there is no ‘right way’ to do work-life balance.

As we Build Back Ever Better, we look forward to leveraging our experiences and see how we can bend them a little better so that we can prepare our children for the many roles they will have in future and maybe they can have a better balance than we have.
