A personal perspective on the need for action in Dhaka.

As a person who has grown up in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, I have witnessed its transformation into a livable city. However, with this transformation has come an unwelcome companion: worse traffic. Commuting during working hours has become almost impossible, and the situation is worsening. As a regular commuter in the city, I have realised that urgent action is needed to tackle the major traffic issues in Dhaka.

Major Traffic Issues in Dhaka:

  1. Overcrowding: Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with a population of over 21 million people. This has led to an overcrowding of roads, making traffic congestion a major problem.
  2. Lack of Public Transport: Despite its large population, Dhaka's public transportation system is inadequate, and it is possibly the only megacity in the world without a proper taxi service. As a result, most of the population relies on private transport, exacerbating traffic congestion.
  3. Poor Road Conditions: Many of the roads in Dhaka are in poor condition and sometimes occupied by roadside traders, making it difficult for vehicles to move smoothly. This leads to traffic congestion, as vehicles have to slow down or stop frequently.

Urgent Steps to Improve the Situation:

  1. Investing in Public Transportation: To decrease the number of vehicles on the road, the government should allocate funds towards a dependable public transportation system. This could involve expanding bus and train networks and providing reliable taxi services with multiple options to cater to the masses 24/7.
  2. Developing Infrastructure: Although several major constructions, including multiple elevated expressways and metro rail expansion, are underway, there are still limited bypass options in case of road congestion. To accommodate the increasing number of vehicles, there is a need to develop road infrastructure. To ease congestion on the primary roads, the government should invest in constructing new roads and bridges to provide alternative routes.
  3. Promoting Sustainable Transportation: Encouraging sustainable transportation, such as cycling and walking, can reduce the number of cars on the road. The government can incentivise this by providing dedicated cycle lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

The traffic situation in Dhaka is a major challenge for the city's development. Urgent action must be taken to tackle the major traffic issues and promote sustainable transportation. By investing in public transportation, developing infrastructure, and promoting sustainable transportation, we can make Dhaka a better place to live and work. As a citizen of Dhaka, I urge the government to take immediate action to improve the traffic situation and create a more livable city.
