One Good Thing: how doing a ‘brain dump’ before bed could help your mental health

Another good idea for looking after your mental health is to always remember to turn your negative emotions into motivation.

And with good reason! Bad emotions have an impact on mental health. They can arise as soon as you fail to stick to your action plan. So it's important to listen to your negative emotions and not just suppress them, they will help you to be flexible enough to change course and it will increase all the positive affects in the long term and reduce the negative ones. So we should be making progress towards our goal. Conversely, suppressing them will lead to the opposite.

So using “brain dump” before bed could also help your mental health as if you write them into the paper, it could allow you to easily turn negative emotions into motivation.

But be careful! Not all these strategies work for everyone! It's important to feel motivated to succeed.

I find a before-bed brain dump super helpful!  As someone with a very busy ADHD brain, there are always tons of thoughts and ideas floating around my head, so having the chance to get them all onto paper before getting into bed helps me wind down and have a better chance at getting to sleep more easily. It also encourages me to reflect on the day, practise gratitude and stay organised.
