I've never been one to count my daily steps, instead opting to focus on a destination or sometimes a specific amount of time. However, the most enjoyable ones (walks or runs) are when I head out without a plan or intentional route, make it up as I go along, and see where I wind up. Sure, I've gotten lost more than a few times, but that in itself is an adventure.
