Every day, more than 1 billion meals are wasted worldwide, even as hundreds of millions continue to suffer from hunger. A recent UN report highlights this troubling gap.
Food waste extends beyond what's left on our plates; it's a global challenge with significant implications. Inefficient production, distribution, and consumption practices worsen hunger, harm the environment, and lead to economic losses.
However, we all have a role to play in addressing this issue. Through mindful consumption, reducing waste at home, backing efforts to redistribute surplus food, and advocating for systemic changes, we can drive positive change.
The world wasted 1.05 billion metric tons of food in 2022, meaning about a fifth of the food available to people was squandered by households, restaurants and other parts of the food service and retail sectors. This is on top of the 13% of the world’s food lost as it makes its journey from farm to fork. In total, about a third of all food goes to waste during the production process.
