224,000 people, including myself, took part in last months Big Plastic Count. The results….an estimated 1.7 billion pieces are thrown away a week in the UK. While the results are shocking, they may not be surprising. According to research, the UK throws away more plastic per person than every other country in the world, except the US.

Despite the staggering statistics and the growing body of evidence showing the harm that single-use plastic is doing to both the environment and our own health, governments are still negotiating a Global Plastics Treaty which could bring the kinds of measures we need to end the age of plastic.

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” In a similar fashion, the best time to switch away from single-use plastic was twenty years ago but everyday action now can lessen the problem.

You might know the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recyle, but have you heard of Remove, Refuse and Rally?

Remove, is simple, pick up bits of rubbish in your neighbourhood and when visiting parks and beaches.

Refuse. It might take a little bit of practice to create new habits, but saying "no straw please" or “I bought my own cup, thanks” are small steps that can accumulate quickly.

Rally. Does your city or state have bans on single-use plastics? Earthday.org share resources of you can send a letter to your local elected leaders.
