Elf on the Shelf is a fun part of many families Christmas traditions now, however for Blind and low vision children, they may be concerned by the fact that they can't touch elf on the shelf. This is where a special letter from Santa comes in.
Read the letter from Santa
As a Blind parent, I found the letter from Santa magical, it talks about how Santa sees everyone as an individual and goes on to explain that many people think that we need to be able to see to believe.
As we get together as families and friends, take time to think about anything you can do to make the time more inclusive, from ensuring there is good contrast between plates and the table through to providing quiet spaces for people to rest and reset.
Christmas is a magical time of year, and everyone deserves to “feel it.” The elf that I sent to be your scout was selected just for you! His magic is extremely unique because he can only be touched by a child who is blind or low vision! Every morning when you discover where your elf has been hiding, you have my permission to feel what he’s been up to. Grab his hands and see what he’s holding. Run your finger along his body to feel if he’s cold from his journey back from the North Pole. Hold his tiny body close to your nose and take a whiff. Does he smell like gingerbread? If he does, I bet it’s because he’s been sneaking cookies from Mrs. Claus’ kitchen. Ho! Ho! Ho!
