Aira, the visual interpreting service comes to Walmart stores, the service provides a mobile app connecting blind and low vision shoppers with an agent trained as a sighted guide. Aira is a service users can subscribe to an use anywhere, but through partnerships like this one with Walmart, shoppers can use it free of charge.
Watch this video from Blind film makers, James Rath as he goes shopping with the service.
I personally use Aira for sighted assistance, I can't wait for UK supermarkets to follow Walmart's example providing the service for free in their stores.
While Walmart leads the way, the blind and low vision community should not have to wait for accessibility to become the norm. Retailers of all sizes can adopt similar programs, ensuring every shopper feels welcome and supported. As visual interpretation technology continues to evolve, the retail industry has an opportunity to transform how it serves customers with disabilities. What Walmart is doing today should inspire supermarkets worldwide to step up and create a shopping environment that is truly inclusive. Walmart’s initiative is more than just a pilot program—it’s a blueprint for a future where accessibility is a standard feature in every supermarket. The question now is: which retailer will step up next?
