Every September, Zero Waste Week invites millions across more than 85 countries to rethink their “throwaway” habits and embrace circular living instead. What started in 2008 with under a hundred participants has become a global movement encouraging individuals, businesses, schools, and communities to reduce landfill waste, save money, and fuel a circular economy.
At its heart, Zero Waste Week is about shifting mindsets. It encourages people to question how we dispose of everyday items and to consider the idea that “there is no such place as away.” Every item has a footprint, and reducing waste can protect the planet and preserve valuable resources.
While the corporate focus on zero waste may vary, the movement is not slowing down. More consumers are weaving low-waste practices into their lives, from precycling (buying with future waste in mind) to embracing reuse, repair, and smarter consumption. Zero Waste Week is a reminder that circularity is not about perfection, it is about progress. Every small step counts toward a more sustainable, resource-wise future.
Backed by the UN, Zero Waste Week highlights plastic & fashion waste like fast fashion giants like SHEIN driving overconsumption, landfill & climate impact Every first Monday in September, millions of people across the world commit to reducing their landfill waste for Zero Waste Week (ZWW), an award-winning grassroots campaign founded in 2008. The initiative empowers people and companies to think when it comes to recycling, waste reduction and overconsumption.
