How to embed sustainability in your business school

It’s encouraging to see how business schools are evolving from symbolic sustainability gestures to meaningful action. But embedding sustainability isn’t just about new courses or solar panels, it’s about reshaping how we define business success. True progress happens when sustainability becomes part of the institution’s DNA, influencing decisions, leadership development, and community engagement.

One of the most valuable lessons higher education can teach is that sustainability and profitability aren’t opposites, they’re interdependent. When students learn to evaluate risk, resource use, and social impact with equal weight, they become professionals who can drive long-term value in any sector. This mindset shift is what the next generation of leaders need.

The real opportunity lies in collaboration. Academia, industry, and government must work together to design programs that reflect real-world sustainability challenges and opportunities. If business schools lead by example, measuring their impact and fostering transparent dialogue, they can shape a generation of graduates ready to turn sustainability from theory into action.
