In recent years, there has been a growing push to encourage more women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. Despite progress, there is still a significant gender gap in these fields. To help inspire young girls to pursue STEM careers, Mattel, the makers of Barbie, have launched a new line of dolls celebrating women in STEM.

The new Barbie dolls feature women who have contributed significantly to STEM fields. These dolls are modelled after real women who have broken barriers and made a difference in their respective fields. Among the dolls is Katherine Johnson, a mathematician whose work at NASA was instrumental in the success of the first human spaceflight. Another is Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space. These women and others like them serve as role models for young girls who may not have considered pursuing a career in STEM.

The idea behind the dolls is to provide young girls with more diverse role models. For far too long, the image of a scientist, engineer, or mathematician has been that of a man. This can be discouraging for girls who don't see themselves reflected in these fields. By creating dolls that showcase women who have made significant contributions to STEM, Mattel is helping to change the narrative.

In my opinion, the new line of Barbie dolls celebrating women in STEM is a positive step forward. By showcasing real women who have made significant contributions to these fields, Mattel is helping to inspire and empower young girls. While the dolls may not solve the gender gap in STEM, they are a valuable tool in the effort to close it. It is important that we continue to support initiatives like these, which aim to provide girls with the resources and inspiration they need to pursue their dreams in STEM.

I look forward to working with the next generation of inspiring women in our Intertek labs!
