RNIB Continue Campaign to Dispel Sight Loss Stereotypes

RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) launched a campaign in October 2022 challenging people to see the person, not the sight loss. Read my post at the time: See The Person, Not the Sight Loss, Tim Dixon (bbeb.com). RNIB have followed this up with a #BeforeYouAsk campaign to help dispel common stereotypes.

Some of the questions asked can be staggering - but I personally don't mind people asking questions, if it is respectful and from a place of good intent. If you haven't had to find a way to do something with sight loss, it is easy to assume it isn't possible or not know how it can be achieved. There are ways of doing most things, just differently to how you would with sight.

Please share this and help dispel common stereotypes about sight loss.

The&Partnership creative, Jane Reader, added: “I am blind in one eye so this idea was based on my own personal experience of living with sight loss. “I often get asked silly questions such as ‘How many fingers am I holding up’? and ‘How can you drive?’ I felt it was about time the visually impaired people got the chance to answer all these questions once and for all.” The&Partnership creative directors, Matt Moreland and Chris Clarke, concluded: “Do you have sex? Can you use a phone? Some of the questions visually impaired people get asked is honestly staggering. “Which is what we wanted to tackle in this campaign – puncturing preconceptions with humour and showing what it’s really like to live with sight loss.”
