A groundbreaking initiative to safeguard Asian elephants in the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar region.
In a significant stride towards conservation, Bangladesh Railway has completed the first-ever elephant overpass on the Dohazari-Cox's Bazar railway line. Situated in critical forest areas hosting endangered Asian elephants, the overpass aims to ensure their safe traversal. Fences and strategically planted banana trees on the overpass enhance safety measures. However, experts caution that a solitary overpass may not be enough, emphasizing the importance of maintaining multiple passageways to prevent potential collisions, which could endanger the Asian elephant population.
A comprehensive study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) identified 16 elephant corridors along the railway track, emphasizing the need for adequate measures to protect these vital passageways. The completion of this unique overpass signifies a crucial step in balancing development and environmental preservation.
The recently completed Dohazari-Cox's Bazar railway line passess through three forested areas, which are also home to the endangered Asian elephants. These magnificent creatures rely on these forests for sustenance and water sources. To ensure their safe passage, the railway authority has erected an overpass at the Chunati point, marking a milestone as the first-ever elephant overpass on a rail track in the South Asian region.
