Toyota is building a new city on the site of a former manufacturing facility near the foot of Mount Fuji. Called the “Woven City”, it will be a living experiment on how to better move people and things from one place to another. According to the company, it's a “key initiative for Toyota to transform itself into a mobility company.”
Research will include potential advancements in personal mobility, automated driving, robotics and artificial intelligence. There will be three separate types of streets used for different purposes: one for autonomous driving, one for personal mobility vehicles, and one reserved for pedestrians. Goods will move across the city via underground roadways.
Of course, sustainability will also be a key element in building the city, with homes and buildings made of sustainable materials and green spaces integrated into the 175-acre footprint.

“Building a complete city from the ground up, even on a small scale like this, is a unique opportunity to develop future technologies, including a digital operating system for the city’s infrastructure,” says Toyoda, of the smart city. “With people, buildings and vehicles all connected and communicating with each other through data and sensors, we will be able to test connected AI technology in both the virtual and the physical realms, maximising its potential.”
