Homemade Sign Language Translator

The Raspberry Pi is a widely acclaimed, affordable computer designed to democratize computing and foster a wide array of projects, thanks to its seamless integration with sensors, motors, controllers, and cameras. The spectrum of projects achievable with a Raspberry Pi is remarkable, ranging from a desktop PC to a web server, or even a controller for a factory production line.

Nekhil is utilizing the Raspberry Pi to develop a sign language interpreter, enabling sign language users to communicate with those who do not understand sign language. Although the device and its implementation are in the early stages, the source code and 3D printer designs are openly available for anyone interested in building their own.

The availability of inexpensive components and open-source software paves the way for a more inclusive and innovative society.

The camera module captures the movements of the signer’s hands, while the Raspberry Pi processes the data using machine learning and translates the gestures into spoken words. A speaker then delivers these out loud.
